Sometimes, we don’t find the right words when someone is going through sadness.
This letter to a friend is written for someone very special to me who was going through a very difficult time.

Letter to a Friend: Between Your Shadows and Your Lights

Maybe, if all of us who write to our friends in moments like this shared our words, we could find the ones that are truly needed.

If you think this letter could be better or you have something to add, let me know in the comments.
Or, if you are that friend, tell me what words you would like to hear.

And although seeking professional help is the most important step, the support of family and friends is also essential in the recovery process.

A letter to a friend, between your shadows and your lights

I can’t imagine what you’re going through, but I wish I could help you.

I wish I had the perfect remedy to ease your sadness.

If only there were the right words to make you feel better.
I’d love to give you a smile that could heal your pain—one of those smiles you’ve given me over so many years.

Still, I know it’s not that simple to take your sadness away.

I don’t think sadness has defeated you.
On the contrary, I see a strong and brave person fighting to overcome one of the worst illnesses I know.

It can erase dreams and hopes and, at times, lead a person to think about hurting themselves.
Sometimes it hides so well that you don’t even notice it, keeping you from asking for help in time.
It can also prevent you from seeing and recognizing yourself as the wonderful and important person that all of us who are part of your life can see.

Seeing your strength and courage to fight every day, I know I can’t give you more strength than you already have.

And even if I try to make you smile, I know that won’t heal you, nor can I force you to share the sadness or emptiness you carry somewhere inside you.

Forgive me if I don’t know what to say or do.

What I do know is how much I care about you and how important you are to me.

I’m here to listen if you need to talk, or simply to be by your side in silence.
Always with you.
Always on your side.

I ask for your forgiveness in advance if, in trying to make you feel better, I say or do something that doesn’t help.

I don’t know when you’ll be okay.

But I want you to know that I’ll be here with you, as your friend—
now in the darkness, even if you can’t see me,
and in the light, when I see you shine.

Because if there’s one thing I know about this sadness,
it’s that, with time, it can heal.

How to write a letter to a friend in difficult times

Sometimes, writing a letter to a friend in difficult times isn’t about finding the perfect words, but about having the courage to say what we feel.

Maybe it’s not about knowing what to say, but about being there.
About writing from a place of honesty, even when we’re not sure it will be enough.

Because sometimes, the only thing that truly matters… is that someone stays.
