This book, lessons in chemistry, is a reminder of how powerful it can be to stay true to yourself, even when the world seems designed against you. It’s the perfect read for anyone who has ever felt — at some point in life, or perhaps throughout it — that they don’t easily fit in.
The book tells the story of Elizabeth Zott, a brilliant and determined woman whose life unfolds in 1961 from the very first chapter. Elizabeth, a chemical researcher, unexpectedly finds herself hosting a cooking show on television — but on her own terms. Throughout its pages, we learn about her relationship with her family, her academic journey, and her relentless struggle to carve out a space as a scientist in a male-dominated world. Interestingly, the first two chapters already contain enough spoilers for much of the story, yet the book manages to keep readers engaged until the very end.

The narrative is told by an omniscient narrator who knows every detail about the characters and their thoughts — even those of Six-Thirty, the dog. The first two chapters are set in 1961, and from the third chapter, the plot jumps back 10 years. From there, the story progresses linearly but often revisits the past through memories. This narrative style, which reveals every perspective and situation in detail, likely contributed to the book’s successful adaptation into an Apple TV series, which, I must admit, I haven’t watched yet.
The author vividly describes each character and scene, allowing readers to clearly picture everything. This makes the book an “addictive” experience, as many reviews have noted. In my case, I read it from start to finish in a single Sunday; I simply couldn’t put it down, even when I had already guessed some of the outcomes.
Themes in Lessons in Chemistry
The main themes include the determination to fulfill one’s purpose, the importance of change, and the constant struggle to be valued and recognized in a society that diminishes women’s roles. Elizabeth Zott is an unconventional protagonist for her time — a woman whose strength and authenticity challenge stereotypes and leave a lasting impression.
While I thoroughly enjoyed the book, one thing I would have preferred is less information in the first two chapters. Because of this, I was able to predict much of the story early on. In fact, if I’d known, I would have started reading from chapter three. Despite this, the subtle humor and irony in the narration make the book a perfect blend of reflection, emotion, and entertainment.
It’s an easy read with a well-constructed and developed story. Its clear and simple language, combined with touches of humor, drama, and irony, makes it engaging and enjoyable. Although it tackles significant challenges, painful situations, and difficult moments, its resolution ultimately turns it into a comforting story.
Should You Read Lessons in Chemistry?
I recommend this book to anyone looking for a well-told and entertaining story that addresses women’s struggles to secure their place in history and be recognized and valued. But above all, I recommend it to those who, for whatever reason, feel like they don’t “fit in.” This book will teach you that, in the end, all you really need is to be yourself, because only then can you find your own path, learn in your own way, and meet people who will love all your quirks.
