Y poco a poco,

When Wings Grow Heavy

The days always seemed the same.

The routine never changed.

Only the exhaustion remained:

holding up the walls,

of keeping everything in its place,

of stopping it all from falling apart.

With time,

I forgot my wings.

There was no room inside that structure to unfold them.

Every attempt ended with them striking a wall,

brushing against a beam,

forcing them to fold in a little more,

until I could no longer see them.

So I stopped trying.

And little by little,

I forgot what it meant to fly.

Folded against my back,

the wings were still there.

But I no longer knew their shape.

I could only feel their weight.

I did not know how many feathers they had lost,

or how much damage I had done

by keeping them still for so long.

They felt like a burden.

And when the house began to collapse,

when I finally needed them,

I discovered that I no longer knew how to use them.

And behind me,

the foundations had begun to crack.
