This is the second part of a series about the Humantay Lagoon: First, we explore its history, legends, and science, and at the end you’ll find some practical tips for visiting it.

Location of the Humantay Lagoon

Located in Peru, near Cusco, Humantay Lake is one of those places that feels as if it were taken straight out of a dream. Its beauty and serenity make it an unforgettable destination. But beyond its fame and the perfect photographs that often represent it, I want to share what it truly meant for me to reach this magical corner of nature.

A personal experience at Humantay Lake

After walking for two hours, feeling as though I could not go any farther and that reaching the top was almost impossible, the trail finally led me to a place that felt both wonderful and indescribable. Then, right in front of me, appeared something breathtaking: a turquoise lagoon surrounded by snowcapped mountains that seemed to touch the sky.

At that moment, everything else disappeared. The worries, time, the noise… everything faded away, and a deep sense of fullness filled every part of me.

It was hard for me to believe that what my eyes were seeing was real. And it was there, in that suspended silence, when I understood something I had heard before.

Happiness beyond positivism

Dr. Laurie Santos points out that two practices can help us feel happier: gratitude and the ability to be fully present. Without even searching for it, I was experiencing both at the same time. I felt grateful for the opportunity to witness something so perfect, and at the same time, I immersed myself completely in that moment, trying to preserve every detail in my memory, knowing it would not be easy to return.

However, describing the place is difficult. The turquoise water reflected the landscape like a mirror, while the snow-capped mountains stood like ancient guardians, silently watching over that magical corner of the world.

The color of the lagoon changes depending on the clouds above and the angle from which you observe it. Because of this, it feels as though every minute you are looking at a different lagoon.

But even more difficult than describing the landscape is explaining what I felt there: a mixture of wonder, gratitude, and a peace so profound that it seemed to emerge from nature itself. The most beautiful things in life cannot truly be explained; they must be lived. And each person experiences them in their own way.

This place reminded me how important it is to pause and feel grateful. Not to force happiness or pretend to smile all the time, but to allow ourselves to fully experience whatever each moment brings.
