Where does the journey begin?

For those of us who do not live in Peru, the journey begins at Lima Airport. I decided to spend a couple of days in the city, which blends history and modernity in fascinating ways. However, Lima deserves a story of its own (coming soon). From there, I took a flight to Cusco, a destination full of charm and mysticism, where my adventure to Humantay Lake truly began.

From the city of Cusco, you can travel by road to the town of Mollepata, a journey of approximately 102 km (63 miles) that takes between two and three hours. If you join an organized tour, you will most likely be picked up between 4:00 and 5:00 a.m.

It is important to dress warmly, as temperatures can vary considerably throughout the day. While daytime temperatures may reach 19°C (66°F), early mornings are much colder and can even drop to 0°C (32°F) during the dry season.

Many tours stop in Mollepata for breakfast or to buy last-minute supplies before continuing the journey.

The hike to Humantay Lake begins in Soraypampa. Considered moderately challenging, the route gains approximately 400 meters (1,312 feet) in elevation, climbing from 3,879 meters to 4,272 meters above sea level.

The distance may vary depending on where your transportation drops you off. My watch recorded 3.36 km (2.1 miles) on the way up in 1 hour and 36 minutes, and 4 km (2.5 miles) on the way down in 1 hour and 42 minutes. In my case, the vehicle left us almost one kilometer before the usual starting point.

On the ascent, we chose the most direct route. On the way down, we preferred a safer path. The terrain is rocky and steep, especially during the final stretch before reaching the lake.

Horses are available for hire if you prefer not to hike the entire route on foot. They can be a good option for completing part of the ascent.
